I have been 38 miles out in the Atlantic many times with mine. Also that's how the charter boats around here work. They won't ride unless they see a swam of birds on their radar. I wish I had one on mine I'd use it to find the birds and run to them.

I try to stay in the channels where they are not supposed to be.
I drive slow and keep a good look out. If your eyes are adjusted and there is enough moonlight, you can see upcoming markers and bouys. I also keep a search light handy.
