Default evinrude wont idle

The other day I took my v out fishing and I had some engine trouble. The boat ran great on the way out to the fishing spot. When I went to start it to move to another spot It took awhile to get it started and it did not want too stay running. I had to hurry up and throw it in gear and give it throttle then it ran fine . When I slowed down to idle it started to run rough and then stalled.I repeated this 2 or 3 times with the same outcome. I took the plugs out and they were dripping with gas.I put a new set of plugs in and still had the same problem. When I took them out they to were covered in gas. When I run it with ear muffs and hose it will idle (a little rough) but will not stall.Did a compression check and all cyclinders were at 110.My vro is not hooked up i am running pre mix.I cleaned all of the carbs, all new fuel lines, filter and gas. Please help I cant figure this problem out .The motor is a 1992 150 evinrude and like I said at full throttle it runs like a champ.Thank in advance for any advice that you might have.

When did you clean the carbs last? Also do a spark test on it while cranking it. You could have a weak coil, or a failing optical sensor in it. Does it spin up to normal RPM's at WOT?

I just went through the carbs so I know that is not the problem and each plug is getting spark. I did notice the plugs in it were champion QL77JC4 when the motor calls for champion QL78YC do you think that could be the problem. Also on all my other outboard I had I could never troll with champion plugs because they would always foul up when I switched to NGK never I never had a fouling problem again. I know a couple of other guys who had the same results with champion plugs. How do you feel about champion.

The QL77JC4's are actually better for idling as they don't load up as bad. NGK's will run like CRAP in a JOHNNY-RUDE, stick with CHAMPIONS. Do you have a spark tester that uses the adjusteable gap? If not go to ADVANCE or AUTOZONE and buy one and see how far it will jump spark. These engines need a HOT ignition, if the stator gets week the idle WILL suffer as these engines don't use a 2 stage stator like a MERC does. Also check your magnets in the flywheel to make sure none have come loose.

i run NGK plugs in my 96 johnson 150 and have had no problems with them. i get them for free. have been running them for 2 years.

but ferm knows his engines and i would never question him.

I took my flywheel off so I could see the stator. I noticed that at some point there was some stuff that seemed to be leaking off the stator and onto the block. Is this normal. The stuff has dried hard and is not stickey. Is the stator bad? Thanks for your replies.

that's where it has been run hot and the stator lost some of the tar like instuallon, yeah that could be it as the stator could have some resistance lose. i have a few that way that still run fine thought. and as ferm said stick to Champions in a J/E. run from the NGK's aka NFG's

When exactly did this problem begin? When did you clean the carbs? Was the problem there before the carb job or not until after? Did cleaning the carbs change it at all? There is a good chance you got the idle and mid range jets mixed up and that is causing your issues. You could have had dirty carbs to begin with, and then if you got the air bleeds in the wrong spots afterwards it would have the same symptoms. Find the numbers on your carbs and then go to EVINRUDES parts site and make sure you have the jets in the right places according to the parts diagrams.
