I've read the stories about the cobes escaping the fish box and beating the boat (and crew) to death before flopping back in the water.

I've only seen a few while out there. Last memorial day weekend on our way out of hatteras we stopped about 10 - 15 miles off to take a pee break and one came up to the transom to have a look. Sat there for about 10 seconds, looked me in the eye, then took off like he was shot out of a cannon! Cool! My buddy ended up catching one while trolling for dolphin on that trip. Probably around 20 - 25 lbs, a baby by cobia standards.

thats funny right there, but 20-25 still makes a lot of steaks, i wish i had pics of a 70 pounder we caught that won the GIITR that year. 45 minute fight on a penn spinning outfit. i forgot the name of the billy stick but its made out of soild fiberglass and about 1" diam. but when you hit somthing with it it doesnt bounce off.
