Default New Owner 1977 V20 I/O

Became the proud but somewhat worried owner of a 1977 V20 I/O this weekend. In boat years I think it is older than I am, but
that's ok it has great character and I love the look of it.

Had looked at this site before and you'll (yes Texas) were very helpful.

Had a few questions (well to start with):
1) Should I have any worries putting this old of a boat on a lift with
'slings'?

2) Seems like my research indicates that if the styro-foam(SP) get's wet
under the deck you are looking at soft spots developing in the deck?
Don't feel any now, but how do you know if this could be a problem?

3) Any other advice on checking things for a new boat owner besides the criminal record of the prior owner (just kidding, is a nice guy which my wife knew before 01020001041201160320080304fd8df0623626e7670a005314.jpgthe transaction.

Will try to post some pics, but only have one at this point. Hull is in pretty good shape. Motor runs good. Checked it out on the lake. Was used in 'salt' which I know is a concern, but mechanic (prior owner used) says there was no indication of problems and owner did not use but four times a year and cleaned regularlly. Boat has always been stored inside.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Welcome to the site! Looks like ya gotta good one. What kinda engine an drive ya got? Iv got a 77 also with a 170 Mercuiser. They're good motors if taken care of, and easy on gas!

Oh, forgot ta tell ya , check your transom really good. Mine was rotten along with the transom cap, engine bed and stringers. All can be replaced with a little time, work and a little money. When these older boats were built they didnt seal up the wood core in the transom where the cutout for the drive is! If its been kept dry it could be OK!

Default Engine Info I think

Replaced stern drive and engine with 1986 OMC stern drive and Marine Dodge 6cyl engine. Very clean and very quiet though. Stern drive was totally rebuilt three years ago.

There was a little smoke coming from the carburetor though, but I think was steam from a cleaning in the morning if that makes sense. Found a mechanic who can work on it close which I hope I don't need.

yes you can use slings or just pick it up with the transom eyes and the bow eye.

Default Boat Lift Slings

SKOOLS OUT-
Thanks Skools Out. Actually plan on storing the boat on a boat lift. Hope she is up to it. No problem so far.

General How To-
Have some very small rust stains on the hull. Any good product for this which will not damage the gelcoat?

Default Transom Worries

Have not noticed any transom issues but will check closer. Not sure I know how though?

Also, have seen some issues with fuel tanks on the V20. When I have a problem will I just know, or is there something I need to do?

Maybe I should just have a six-pack and stop worrying so much..........
