Default Outboard hydrofoil???

I just switched out my 225 Johnson for a much newer 200 Yamaha EFI. My Johnson had a hydrofoil and planed up nicely even with a family of 6, with 4 small kids. Do I need one with my new power? How much of a difference do they make?

Did you ever ride your previous motor w/o the foil? If you did and you felt you needed it you will probably want it again. They do help put a boat up on plane faster if thats your goal.
My previous boat with a 150 merc had it and that boat launched onto plane instantly. W/O the foil would of been a couple of seconds more and would not have made any difference to me.
If I wanted to affect performance and I was going to do something to improve it on my V20 it would be with trim tabs not a foil. Lot more flexability, more performance and the ability to adjust for load side to side. In following seas I could lift them and not have to worry about the push down/slow rise effect foils and forgotten extended trim tabs can cause. Just my opinion of course, and I do realize they cost a lot more but they are easily worth the difference

Try it and see if you like it without. The V20's are "steplift" design, which is supposed to make them plane faster anyway. I do not have a hydrofoil on my V-21 with Yamaha 150 2 stroke and it planes instantly.

I have an old black max 150 on my 83 and It made a big difference. I put the SE 300 on mine which was rated number one by trailer boat magazine with no loss of speed and it jumps up on plane. frank
