| Oregon Inlet Bridge closed

The Herbert C Bonner bridge that connects Oregon Inlet to Hatteras Island has been closed by NCDOT. They were in the process of doing 2 million dollars in repairs to the bridge but decided it needed to be closed today at noon. Ferry's will be running starting tomorrow (Wednesday), You can read about here: http://pilotonline.com/2013/12/bonne...afety-concerns

Thats really sad. I've been going across that bridge my whole life. We rode over to Pea Island about a month ago and I noticed a pretty bad dip over the channel. A friend dives around the bridge during dead tides and said you can swim under the pilings in the channel. Hopefully it can be repaired until a new bridge can be built.

Agree, very sad. I guess that makes it a true island now. I am amazed the bridge lasted as long as it has. Amazing they could build one in that inlet to begin with as volatile as it is.

It was designed to last 30 years, so really in that spot its done really good! They are running ferrys from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe but I cant see them handling all that traffic. Its a bad situation.
