OK I am new to the forum but have a few questions......I just purchased my first v20 it is a 78 steplift 20 ft. I am repowering and was thinking of putting a 200 horse evinrude outboard on the back. I am concerned about the additional weight (Had a 140 evinrude on it) with the transom notched the way they are...I am concidering building up the transom another 5 inches and going with a 25 inch shaft or do you think the weight will not be a issue and just adding a Jack plate with a 5 inch vertical lift will be ok? Thanks in advance

The "78 Cuddy was rated for 240 horse, the Fisherman was rated for a 200 horse. Don't ask me why.
Checking/inspecting the transom is highly suggested. Looking for decayed wood, rot, etc. Building up for a 25" should be considered a transom rebuild unless the existing stuff is in almost perfect condition. Using a jack plate for a 25" in a 20" situation should be considered only if the existing transom is almost perfect given the extra torque applied.

I was more concerned about the additional weight and it pushing the stern down....I know there is about 100 lbs or so of additional weight with the 200 evinrude 200 from the 84 140 rude that was on there..... This is a great site and I hope to contribute half of whatr I have learned back in the future

with a jack plate and a 25 inch motor cant you just put a "filler" in the notch to bring the freeboard up? the jackplate bolts to a standard 20" transom cant you just glue core and then glass the notch, its not structual at that point. Unless the jackplate lips over the 20" notch. Most jack plates ive seen are sraight up the transom and does not roll over the transom lip unless the steering arm or other objects keep from filling in. Or am I just talking jiberish? LOL!!!!
