I love these boats and have been looking to buy one for a while now. I have just been waiting for the right one to come along. I think I may have found it.
It's a 1991 CC model with a 1991 150 Johnson/Evinrude on the back. The boat is in pretty good condition overall. It is solid everywhere, I couldn't find any soft spots or any areas of previous repair. It's on a roller trailer in decent shape. It has brakes but they are clearly not servicble. The carbs on the motor need to be rebuilt. The motor appears to be in really good shape with almost no corrosion. It almost seems like it has been a freshwater boat. The upholstery is original and therefore pretty rough. It has pedestal seats. The rear hatches at the transom are cracked and one is missing half. There are no electronics, t-top or bimini top, no batteries, cable steering seems good, but would prefer hydraulic. The boat is in decent shape and I think it could come back pretty glossy after a good cleaning, compounding and waxing. This boat is being sold as is. I would check for compression, electrical systems, and check out the transom in more detail. Assuming the stuff I can check comes back ok, what is the boat worth. This is a local mom and pop type dealership. It looks like they sell mostly used boats but I think they carry a couple of small aluminum boat lines as well. They are asking $ 5,500 obo and when I left he said he would work out a deal with me. I has the original fuel lines and tank so I assume at the least the fuel lines would have to be changed out? I like the boat overall and I would put my mechanical aptittude around an 8 out 10. I don't mind doing some heavy lifting if the price is right. What do you guys think is a good price to get this at. Again, I think the boat could easily be a 7-8 cosemetically with a little elbow grease, but right now the thing if filthy. I'm thinking in the $2,500 - $ 3,000 range. When I buy it the boat will not be running until i adress the carbs. Thanks for the input.

Welcome aboard the best and only site geared to the V-20's. I think you may have found a good one. I agree that $5500 is a little steep, but I haven't seen the boat. Is it a Center Console (with no bimini or t-top) or a Cuddy Cabin. CC? Either way the in-floor fuel tank may have some varnished up gas in it if it has been sitting for very long. If it does, you may have to contend with removal of the floor hatch for tank removal/cleaning and or replacement. I have never seen a 1991 model. If someone has let it go, there might be a reason WHY? Check that motor out real well before you pull the trigger. It sounds like it could be a diamond in the rough. Very best of luck, post up some pictures, and let us know how you do.

Without being able to run it and seatrial it, you are basically buying a hull with an unknown engine. I think they are asking about double what it's worth, but that's just me. this is a pretty soft boat market right now and alot of boats for sale, but only the ones priced right are moving. 91 could be an aluminum tank so be careful of that as it may be corroded and need replacement(WELLCRAFT flip flopped from aluminum to poly tanks from the mid 80's on). Also check out the transom REALLY closely around the top portion as WELLCRAFT was known to have done a very poor job of sealing the transom cap and water would get in as well as any holes in teh transom from a transducer or something along the way. If it was a running boat I would say they were priced right, but not for a fixxer upper that needs repairs.

Thanks for the info. I just assumed is was an aluminum tank I will definitely check that out. Are there any other known problems with this boat. It is a CC. The bow deck seemed a little soft to me but I couldn't detect and delamination are wet core. I have looked and several and they all seem to be a bit flexy up there. My biggest problem is that the dealer is not going to spend the money to get it running so I'm taking his word which I don't really like. I can to compression check, spark check, fluids, but is there anything else i can do to give me a little more piece of mind? I'm probably going to start at 2,500 and maybe go up to 3,000.

Without it running I wouldn't go a penny higher than $2500 unless she is an immacualte looking boat. There are quite a few V-20's in FL for sale right now for that kind of money that can be used without needing major repairs. Unless he is willing to put it in writing that all it needs is teh carbs cleaned, I would be hesitant to buy it. You never know what you're getting yourself into in a situation like that.

Welcome.....your description is almost nearly identical to the condition of my '86 when I bought it 3 years ago for 4K. (except for the back hatch covers ) Being its through a dealer there is definitely a mark up on it as opposed to buying directly from a seller. Also keep in mind it is a 1991, albeit still a 20 year old boat it somewhat newer than alot of the 70's and 80's boats. My opinion is if he is at $5500 I would be shocked if he let it go for $2500 or 3K....Definitely cant hurt to try....what part of the country are you in? that also has a little bit to do with it. NY/NJ. VA and FL are crawling with V-20's as opposed to midwest, or West Coast.
Ferm's probably right about the chance you are taking buy not running it. I actually took that chance when I bought mine....the compression was good, outdrive had not water in it just didnt want to idle well. Ignorance and trust in the seller (and tired of looking at boats) made me pull the trigger and thank god it worked out....pretty sure I would never do it that way again. Good luck with whatever you do.

Just to give this thread a little closure the dealer said $ 3,500 is as low as he could go
. So this one is off the table for me. Even at $ 2,500 I don't think it would have been a home run, but a decent deal. Oh well, the search continues. Thanks for all the input.
