Default 2001 Johnson oceanpro 150HP...opinions?

For sale locally for $4k. Ad says:

"I have a 2001 Johnson 150hp ocean pro (system check) 25 inch shaft trim and tilt I have everything to install this unit prop harness controls and cables gauges including the system check gauge ready to install trades welcome "

Why is "system check" in parentheses? Is that a special feature that year?

What do you folks think of this motor and the price?

Saw another ad for a 2005/2006 Evinrude DFI 135HP for about same price...opinions?

Thanks,

Rey

"System check" would be the tachometer that has idiot lights and horns built in and announces the status of the oil, temp, low fuel pressure, etc.
For my area, the price seems about $500 high, for a near perfect engine with controls, cables and prop. But then again, go price a new 150 horse, not too bad an asking price.

By 2005, Bombardier was producing Evinrude's and is likely a much better built engine.

I've had an 05 Evinrude 200hp DFi and it's great. Very powerful.

2001?...was that one of the FICHT motor years?...if not and that prop is SS, that'd probably be a pretty good deal...

I'd pay an OMC Tec to go over it checking fluids and compression before buying...

JMHO...135 is not enough HP for one of these hulls...

And Bgreen I believe that the comment on the latter BRP motors being better only applies in the ETEC area against the earlier year ficht's. Actually the latter years of the fichts are supposed to be outstanding engines.
Around everyone I have known in boating for decades now the JohhnyRudes two strokes and Yamaha two strokes are considered the best there is. Durable, reliable, simple, and more so than Yammie powerful.
Plus the earlier yammie two strokes take second place to the Evinrudes due to corrosion problems which yammie did not adequately address until the mid 90's.
The mariners I have known for many years still to this day consider the Evinrude Johnson motors from the late eighties to early 2000's two stroke carbs the best engine on the water.

97-99 150/175 FICHT's were the BIG problem engines, but the carbed engines were AWESOME engines(most all of the JOHNSON's were carbed engines whereas teh EVINRUDES were FICHT's). The 00-early 02 FICHT's were OK, but could be really hit or miss. The late 02+ FICHTS that were built by BRP were EXCELLENT engines that are better on fuel than the ETEC's. As for the 135HP DFI, I believe it would do the job just not in a hurry. There are quite a few V's out there with 135HP MERC's on them that run just fine, as well as quite a few of them with V-4 OMC's that will ge tthe job done. I know mine with the 1.6L sea-drive would plane out loaded down, and that was a 115HP at the flywheel(about a 100 at the prop).
