Steering Clearance (Clarence)

Mine scrapes a little, but not like that...J-Plate'll cure it, just hope steer-cable long enough ... :D ...

As you can see in this picture,
my Evinrude would scrape, but the 78 has a large cut out.



Yes it is dirty, I go for function not beauty.

Here is a shot from the rear and you can see the
large step cut.



I say, grind it away and seal it up.

Steering cable is not long enough, thats why there is not a jackplate on it now.

Install hydraulic steering and be done with your problems. A jackplate is primarily used for shallow water running and they cost much more than hydraulic steering if you select a hydraulic model. Just think, no more cables to freeze up and no steering torque either.
You don't have to remove the motor to remove the old cable. You can cut it with a hack saw. They're really easy to install too. Got mine on ebay from a guy in N.C. It was $465.00. All new stuff too. He has them on ebay all the time. I think his name was Cherry. Did you use any steering components from your Merc? Maybe you can fix your problem with another type of steering arm. Good luck.

i wouldn't install a jackplate but is your transom soft? can you stand on the cavatation plate and bounce the motor to see if the transom moves in and out it looks like the transom is going and has started to bow out in the center. i've seen that on bad transom boats.

where is the tilt tube on that 140? those motors may be different from the older motors. it may just be the motors new design. just rub some 5200 in the groove you ground and let it go if the transom is solid.

I did the bounce test, solid as a rock. I think the whole problem is the transom cap being so wide.

The 140 fit fine on the Starcraft with no problem, and it was 10 years older than this boat.

On an '84 V, is the transom cap covering bare wood or is it glassed over?

I looked at a hydraulic setup on a boat at the dealer the other day and I think it would rub on both sides, but I may be wrong.

Skools or Stinky I forgot which, took the transome cap off and glassed and painted it over.

That might be the perfect thing to do??
