Default starter trouble ?

I had off work for a few days and decided ta take the boat out. I hooked the water hose up to it and proceded to crank it up. When I hit the switch the motor cranked right up but the starter didnt kick out, had to kill the power to get it to stop. Pulled it off and everything looked fine. I changed the bendix and bench tested it and it seemed ok. I put it back on and had the same trouble. I thought it might be the switch so I unhooked the solenoid wire and jumped it off the main wire and it still stayed engauged. It is a Delco-Remy starter on a 170 Mercruiser. I bought it remaned from Advance Auto. I called them and they said its over i year old and its mine now. Anybody got any ideas what makes it hang up like this? Im stumped!!

check the key switch, it could be bad, check the slave selenoid(jump the wires just like you did on the starter)also make sure the wires on the selenoid arn't touching any other

Sorry to tell you but I have never had any luck with electrical parts from advance. If I need electrical I go to NAPA.

Yep, Lee your right!! Me either. I guess it must be the solenoid. Iv checked everything else. I unhooked the small wire to the solenoid and jumped it to make it crank and it did the same thing. Iv got an old starter ,Ill rob the solenoid off of and try. Advance said it only has a 1 year warranty on marine starters. Thats the last time Ill go there!!! I learned my lesson.
