I just saw one in the Japan national Geisha museum. ;)
The sign said it is heated and then rubbed over and at some point inserted. ;D Don't know where, you know those translated signs, sometimes key information is lost so you have to use your imagination or am I just drinking too much Saki. ;D I have to change my guess from the other post, when I said it was an American indian artifact for mashing corn or skinninig deer skin to make leather.
