Default Lower unit and speed indicator

I noticed that the hole in the lower unit that is used for the connection for the speed indicator tubing (fitting) does not have a fitting in it. I do not have a speed indicator and I do not intend to run new tubing to the dash. My question is: do I need to put a plug in this hole, or can I just leave it open?

Thanks

Carl
