Default first real trip

first "real" fishing excursion in the freshly baptized v-20 saturday, fished back bay only and picked up 4 keeper flounder (in jersey that's 17"+) out of a dozen caught. not a bad 3 hours, a pretty decent sign of things to come..... nothing better than fresh fried flounder (ok, fresh toro sashimi, but i'm realistic).

At 17 inches I guessing you mean Fluke (summer Flounder) as that would be a big Flounder!!

i have higher standards ;). they shrink in the cooler from the cold, like other things, and i've been stopped by the wp's with fish that were over the limit when i caught them, but yeah, you're right now that i think about it, i heard a lot of debate about the limit size and got fixated on the 17". damn, i could have had 5 keepers. we call them flounder 'round these parts. watcha doin today. nothin, just floundering.

Sloppyhooker, you must be from or fish S. Jersey. I guess because there doesn't seem to be a winter flounder season south of A.C., well just call all flat fish flounder. I like to fish the reefs north of Little egg for seabass but the water temp at the bottom have been 48deg. while the surface temps are in the mid 60s. This past week we are starting to hear of warmer waters. Now if we don't get blown of the ocean, divers say seabass and fluke are stacked up. Can,t wait. Them upper north east guys on here with all those big cod, stripers and tons of flounder they catch make me envious Crusher

Congrats on the nice first trip. Here on lake Erie a 16.5" walleye would be a nice young good eating walleye, it would weight 1.5# - 2#. What would a flounder or fluke weigh?

from and fish sj, family used to rent for the summer down in stone harbor in the '70's in the pre-limit days, when my granddad, uncle, and dad used to bring home 100 FLOUNDER in a weekend (hence the lack of fish today), the three of them on a fileting production line. i personally wouldn't keep one under 18" since you can't get a very good white side filet, but my dad's a meat man and anything over the limit hits the cooler.

crusher-are you referring to the little egg reef site? if so, i presume you run out of LBI, mystic island, or tuckerton, maybe brigantine. am i right?

the flounder that size will weigh a bit more, 2-2.25, but i'm guessing cuz i don't weigh them unless they're over 20.
