Go with a Evinrude ETec if you want a new motor. Had bad luck with Merc

I speak from first hand experience, I've had good luck w/ Mercury(just replaced a 22 yr old 150 v-6) and I just installed another Merc 150. My old 150 had the stator replaced and it's installed on another boat and back on the water. If you consider an ETEC or others you may want to consider talking to users who actually run one. RP would be good for Honda 4 stroke, MJ with Yamaha, Skools with Johnson/Evinrude. Don't overlook Suzuki either. If you are going with outboard as RP stated, I wouldn't go with anything smaller that a 150 hp. I feel comfortable knowing I can outrun a nasty storm when I need to.
Again, its personal buying preference.

Welcome aboard Nipper! (From the 1st "official" DAWG of the month ;D). I agree with minimum 150HP outboard advice, I had a 150 when I 1st got mine and have had 2 175 power heads since then (21 years). They have all been older Johnson and Evenrude so I have no experience with newer motors. But I have always felt comfortable in any conditions with the V6 power. My nephew in-law has a new E-tec and likes it..and it is very quiet. There are alot of guys here (as you can see) that are much more knowledgable then I and they are always willing to help (although I wouldn't go camping with several of them.) :o ;D

I guess we should warn him. Do not open any pics from a guy named Stinky Hooker with anyone else in the room. You just might see a guy dressed in a purple thong. Not pretty.
