I bought my last one from DB Electric. Haven't had any trouble with it, been on for about 12 years. They're out of Cherokee NC.

I have the original and the cheap one that didnt last long. I think i have the cheap one working again to keep as a spare. Took it apart but didnt find anything wrong? The original one is pretty rusty inside.

That was going to be my next question, could u get the original rebuilt as a spare.

Might be able to take it to a starter shop and they can tell u who the made it for merc.

Sounds like you had solenoid trouble if the bendix wouldnt jump out. You can replace the solenoid pretty cheap and easy. I've rebuilt a bunch of them.
