You are correct Step, in the youtube video he is not installing the rubber seal as designed. The seal is supposed to be installed like a grommet around the flange of the thermostat (as you describe).
I believe the "hat" portion faces the shorter portion of the thermostat, but I will have to confirm that when I replace mine this Spring. The images on the internet are all over the place and are pretty useless. |

Your right Duke, that video was a bad one and when you buy a thermastat(2) I got them sometimes with the hat facing up and down but I agree with you I think it faces the shorter part of the thermostat .

Check out Amazon I just looked for athermostat kit and they have pictures of them and some have it facing up and some have it ( the hat looking rubber) facing down , maybe it doesn't matter,
