That's what I did, the top of the gunnel was too narrow for the base. i think mine is 3/4. never had a problem, but i have not used them that much.

if u want, i can look in my shed and i might have some left over.

Thanks for the information guys. I appreciate your help. I will take some measurements when I get to the boat and see what Starboard thickness I need. The previous owner had downrigger plates bolted directly on the gunnel. It was a tight fit and they were butted up to the lip on the inside edge of the gunnel (if that makes sense).

She is shrink wrapped and put away for the Michigan winter.

Thanks again, Duke

yes the 78 still had the inside lip.

Starboard will work perfectly. You can round off the edges with standard router bits. I find that a fine tooth plywood saw blade on a table saw is best.

I would try to get black starboard.
Might be a lot cheaper to get 12 x 12 x 1/2 and double it

I just ordered a piece of black Starboard via Amazon for $32. 1" thick, 12" x 12". Interesting, the delivery time frame is 1 to 3 months...good thing it is December!

Thanks for the guidance.

Duke

wow, thats a long time. The 1" is not a commonly used product.
You could probably walk into a West Marine and buy 1/2" off the shelf.
