I started with a Garmin years ago and have never looked back! I use to run a handheld before they even had maps and it was always right on! When I sold the sea ox I sold the huge garmin i had on it and it was also great! Can't go wrong with Garmin
good luck

i have a 76c that i use on our little boat when we scallop. it does a good job, by very hard to see in bright sun with old eyes, my fault not garmins. it also seems a little hard to navigate from screen to screen to find things. it has held up well. one problem with garmin is when they stop supporting a model, there is not a lot that can be done with it. if you are just using it as a backup for emergency situations, its great, but a back up for fishing, i'd look for a fixed mount. once again, this is due to screen size, not the product itself.

I used a 76 for 15 years or so, then bought a 78. Like others said, small screen but otherwise, the best. It's all I use.

I also like Garmin...I would look at the 176, 276, 376, etc models for a bigger screen.

I still use my GPSMAP76, and have had it for going on 12 years. Only downfall is there is no support left for it, and you cannot get updated maps for it anymore. Still works though, and I will continue to use it until it dies completely.

If you want a hand held and can swing a bit more $$ the Garmin 78sc is a sweet unit.

I have a garmin 76 also I still don't kno w how to use all the functions but all I need is get me to a spot and in case a fog rolls in Get me back to dock I would stay with garmin but I'm sure the others are just as good maybe 15 years ago it mattered but today I'm pretty sure they are all good, if I was you just look for the one that's easy to operate That's what I plan on doing, talk with a sales person and let them demostrate

There is one thing about the garmin I don't like and I don't know why they do that, I would like to tell them, do you know what it is? I am going to tell you why do they have the screen on the bottom and the keypad on top? Bad design in my eyes
