I never fill my tank up completely. (Tank is in the floor) I watch my gauge and when I'm almost full I stop at the nearest complete gallon mark on the pump. (I also have an app on my phone that tells me the proper ratio of oil to gas). I then look at the app, punch in the amount of gallons of gas I just put in and the app tells me the proper amount of oil at 50:1 to add. Then it's just a simple matter to put in that amount of oil into a gallon gas jug, add a little gas to dilute it further and then pour it down the fill pipe. Always the right mixture every time. I have a '95 Merc 200HP EFI. The oil pump was removed and I premix 50:1. I use Penzoil XLF.
I use my flow meter to determine how much fuel I burned on the last trip and then I add enough oil to fill up again before I leave the house. On the way to the ramp I stop and add the requisite gas. I marked an old oil jug in gallons of gas at 50:1 to simplify the oil calculation.

Huh. In all my years of boating I'd never thought of using a flow meter. Brilliant. Think I may have to order me one.

Thanks guys. I'll try your suggestions and see what works best for me. I do have that app on my iPhone, and even printed out a chart in case the phone dies.

Go to most any marine parts house or supply house, purchase the mixxing botyle thats marked for how much oil for how much gas. If you think you're going to need say 25 gallons, add enough oil for 10 gallons, then put 10 gallons of gas in, oil for 10, then 10 gallons gas, then oil for 5, 5 gallons of gas. You're better off to have a little extra oil than not enough. I like to work in no more than 10 gallon increments so as to reduce the risk of adding way to much oil. Yes, it's 50:1 for that engine. It's going to smoke at idle without vro, just not much you can do about it. Be certain your t-stats are good, working, and your bypass valve is good and properly functioning as well. If that engine runs too cold, it will load up like no tommorrow on 50:1 mix. I like pennsoil semi synthetic myself. Great oil that clings really well to leave a lasting film during storage. Mercury oil smOkes like a SOB at 50:1

MJ used it as well as quite a few others. I believe it is made by pennsoil, but not 100% certain. I've used it a couple of times, but preferred the semi synthetic blend.

I do the exact same thing ferm does and it works out well. My motor does blow a ton of smoke at idle, to the point i get a lot of weird looks from others at the ramp
