Seems high to me. The problem is you are at that point where an unknown used engine for that price and higher with any real use on it becomes a worse deal than buying a new one where you know the history that costs twice as much. The only way you can justify spending the money for a new engine, or a boat for that matter is to USE it. That's the only way you get your money out unless you're buying super cheap and flipping.

Unfortunately twice the price isn't an option, while i'm still paying $600 a month for daycare. Feel I'm just going to take the hit now to get the family back out on the water.

I don't know much about used outboard pricing but, for comparison, the book value of my 2006 V6 Ford Explorer, runs great no rust, is $4100 and it was $30K+ new.

Outboards....when YOU have one to sell they aren't worth much HOWEVER, when you are looking to buy they cost a fortune. I guess it is more than just outboards. I digress.

I closer to the bottom of the barrel with what I deal with age and price wise, so no four strokes yet for me. I sold this engine to this guy in a package deal for $750 running. He went through the carbs, put in a water pump, and painted it.

Cool

Yep, you can tell by the other engines he has in the pictures that's what he does for either a living or to supplement his income. I've run across several people like that. and the really funny thing is they get upset if you want more money, but have no problem after they get the engine of charging more...

$5k still a little steep for me, but I already have one...

I would get a good look at the port side. Its hard to see the plug without removing the lower clam shell. Ask them to show you it and if anything has ever been done. It is possible the '06 has the solid engine holder with no plug.

Ask about the anodes in the port side of the head. If they would let you remove one to look that would be helpful. But once removed, you really need to replace the gasket/o-ring. By now, they should have been replaced as well as the fuel filter and thermostat.

Bradford has a good point.
At 12 years and 950 hrs, I believe I have already gotten my $10k out of my engine. I can afford to keep it going as long as I am confident in it. I wouldn't buy it for $5k...I would sell it for $5k and buy a new one...

I bought mine for 3000 and has 220 hours on it. Thats controls and analog gauge. 5000 sounds pretty high to me. That motor should be in the 3000 to 4000 dollar range. Any warranty with it? You need to look that motor over good before you buy. Research df140 issues and you will learn alot about what to look for. Its a badass motor....i love mine. I average about 4 miles to the gallon with mine.
