Striper,
I'm not a expert by any means but could that extra 3 knots be a lean condition? Alarm with a possible fuel restriction? That could destroy a piston if not corrected. Ferm or Spare will have a much better idea. I'm just guessing.

I thought it was from changing the plugs, but that's certainly a possibility.

If the alarm sounds as soon as you turn the key on, then chances are the restriction sensor is bad. Normally it only trips when under load as thats the only time your pulling much fuel to the engine. As to the wire, is it the one for the tank? Got picture of it by chance so we can see which one your talking about?

Yeah the alarm sounds right after the system check is finished. It sounds for like 10 seconds then stops, the light stays on. It doesn't sound again until I shut the engine off.
I looked on my 96 130 to see if it had the sensor but it doesn't. My boat's about an hour away and I won't be able to get to it until Saturday.

Try unplugging it and see if the alarm continues to go off.

Which plug is for the sensor? Maybe I left it disconnected when I repaired the tilt trim inadvertently. The first time I started it was at the ramp on Sunday since repairing it.

Find the fuel restriction sensor(should be a small round canister with 1 fuel line hooked to it mounted to the VRO bracket), and follow the wires from it to the harness. With it unpluged it should not work as it is a switch that closes under vacuum.
