I have an 89 110 hp evinrude. The trim pump when bad and I replaced it. I had some Evinrude fluid but it wasn't enough to fill the unit and the nearest dealer is about an hour away. Both manuals I have spec their fluid, but they spec their part #'s for everything else as well. Can I use a generic fluid or should I just bite the bullet and pic up the factory stuff? I do have 2 other OMC engines so it's not like it'll go to waste. Thanks

Truthfully, I don't know the "proper" answer .... but logic says that hydraulic cylinders should be filled with hydraulic fluid. So as long as you use the right type it really shouldn't matter if you use OMC, Mercury, Shell, or Kmart. A fluid cannot label itself as Dexron I or II or ABC or anything unless it meets certain specs. So as long as the fluid meets the called for specs I would think it's fine to use. (And I've been using power steering fluid in my 200HP Mercury's trim cylinders for several years now with no problems)

That's my thought as well. I'm just trying to get it sorted as soon as possible since I have a possible buyer for the engine.

I've used ATF in the past in a pinch, another option is hydraulic jack oil. It is pretty much identical to trim tilt fluid.
