even with premix, you will still have a lot of smoke on a cold start up, just the nature of the beast. and more smoke while idling because your mixed at 50:1. trade off is you will have peace of mind engine is lubed properly.

my 60 would do that, turned out to be a bad seal on the oil pump itself, it would leak oil into the bottom cylinder(oil pump mounted lower on a 60), when i went to crank it, it sounded like the starter was bad or the battery was low, once it fired up, it would kill mosquitoes for miles around. Let it sit for a few days, pull the plugs, see if oil spews out of one hole(#2?), it would probably leak down thru the sealing rings as well, so don't be surprised if it comes out of all the cylinders. I ended up replacing the oil pump with another one, it fixed the problem

I am lazy and really didn't want to bother with the hassle of premix. I like the ease of just pumping reg gas into my tank and then having the engine do it's own mixing. But, like everyone else with an older Merc, I was afraid of that plastic gear that drives the oil pump breaking and me suddenly being miles offshore with a busted engine. My solution was to purchase and install an electronic oil injection system from Marine Solutions, Inc.

http://www.marinesolutionswi.com

The actual installation took me just over an hour. The unit comes with instructions and everything necessary to do the changeover, even including a new set of spark plugs. (NGK BUZ8H) The system works like a dream and I could not be happier. No more worrying about no oil in the engine, and no more wondering if I put the right amount of oil into the gas tank. You might want to consider this also instead of disabling your oil injection system. Just my .02 cents

Default oil inject

When I first was looking at my 1987 V20 with 94 Mercury 200, a friend told me about the nylon gears and to be careful. I bought the boat. about a year later the gear went out (in the harbor!) I listen to alarms & so had the chance to do what my friend advised at first, Neuter the beast!! Yes, it smokes at start up & idle, I drag a trawl & have some issues, due to lugging at a slow speed, but a short fast run & all's well. Otherwise the sucker is a beast! Never expected the engine to last 5 years, here I am 15 years later, & it starts on every turn of the key.
