my father had a 1960 Mercedes 190 db, it was rated at 54 mpg in 1960! Every time something comes along that will actually work, the government will come up with a regulation to make it not feasible. Diesel is the best bet we have, but US regulations specifically target diesel emissions. Funny that European emissions that are stricter don't have any issue with diesel engines. Hydrogen fuel cells will work, but thanks to the current administration, CO2 has now been considered harmful.

the real fix to high oil and foreign dependence is like T.Boone said CNG.

You can do it now but it's pricey and the EPA has made it too damn expensive to be cost effective.

You needs a Nat Gas compressor to fill your car from your nat gas line at your house then you would need to convert your car to nat gas. to have that done legally you are going to be in the system for about 15k.
