yeah I was going to check the stator in the spring, I need to get a puller from somewhere. As far as the lower, it could be, the end of the screw is always perfect, no shavings. What makes me wonder is, when I purchased the engine, the mechanic AKA ( *#+hole) told me that he used a lower from a 95'. Don't know if it matters or not. I will check the stator though.Thx

Joker,
I used a cheap puller I got from Harbor Freight to remove the flywheel on a 200 Evinrude (96). You will need to use fine thread bolts to attach the flywheel. Once you apply the needed pressure a good bump from a hammer and it should break free. I had to use a bench grinder to grind down a socket to get it to fit inside the flywheel to remove the center nut on the crank.

take a light and a mirror, look up under the flywheel, I bet you got a magnet loose
