even 2 gallons seems like a TON to me! If the boat did fill with water it could have seeped in around the sending unit? I would check all hoses and reseal sending unit...also replace O-ring on cap

...or check to make sure the fill cap has a rubber o-ring seal. My buddy's boat kept getting water in the fuel. Finally found that the o-ring had fallen off (or never been there to begin with) and that fixed it.
