Have you tested it at distances? The one I bought 5-6 years ago doesn't punch very far. Honestly I don't know how much good it will do unless there are boats within sight.

Don't forget that VHF radio has a line of sight signal, so if you're swimming around in the water your signal range is going to be limited. All the info I've been able to find on range suggest 1-3 miles for these radios. Still, that's a lot further than I can shout. Like I said, it's cheap insurance.
