the merc part # is 46-96148A

also, like ferm says, if your going with new t-stats & water pump kit, i'd get the poppet valve kit also.

i change all of those once a year in mine.
Ok no problem. I had the poppet valve off already and it was on the list just below the thermostats. While i have the lower unit, would it hurt to flush the engine thru the thermostat holes and the poppet valve hole with the hose?

I don't think it would be a problem, but i'd wait for a grown-up to give you a better answer. i know when i have mine apart i made an adapter so i can hook a water hose up directly to the water intake tube and when i pull the t-stats i flush out those holes, but hever have done the poppet valves.
one thing i have found out is t stats open a different temps. over the years i have a coffee can full of old ones( why i keep them, i do not know). i threw them in a pot of boiling water to open them up & while they were open i stuck a piece of fishing ling in each one and let them cool. then i took them and hung them in a pot of cold water and started heating it up. i used my laser thermometer to check temps and some started dropping @ 120 on up to 180 degrees. now when i put new ones in, i check them to see if they are opening about the same.

sometimes i think i have too much free time

Wanna come strip bottom paint?

I cut an old garden hose and it slid right on the intake tube. I flushed it a little bit with the hose bibb hardly on. Not sure how much pressure I can put on the system.

No more Mercury Parts Express

They have this BS that you cannot order parts online through. www.mercurymarine.com/parts-and-accessories/parts-catalog/

Ferm got to it first Destroyer. It may have lasted a while longer but why take the chance. I have had folks try to convince me that a second or two without water will fry the impeller. I simply ain't buying it. Not a servicable impeller anyways. I did a water pump job on the 90 Johnny before going to the keys. I ran 12 gallons of fuel through the motor at idle, then a shift lever gave up, went back into it. At first the impeller blades were bent but they straightened back out over a period of about an hour.

Yup. Like I said in the previous posts, it's always a good idea to change them. And anything dry rotted, cracked, burned, torn and worn gets the heave-ho instantly. But I was basing my "looks ok" comment on the fact that it looked like the impeller was just pulled out of the housing when the pics were taken, and given that short time period there's no way that the vanes would straighten out right away. I have the same engine. I know it takes a half hour or so for them to straighten out after they have taken a set from the housing. The cracking however is a game killer. Time for a new impeller.

JCK, they do make an entire kit (Housing, plate, impeller, key, and gaskets) I think I have one at home. As soon as I get home I'll see if I can find it and post Mercury's part numbers for it off the box.

Awesome thanks, Destroyer. The impeller has been out of the cup for a day now. Fins still curled over.

Jason, sorry, the box it's in is a different box than the one it came in... and all I've been able to find on the internet is Sierra and Mallory(sp) kits.. real Mercury seems to only be available from a dealer.
