I sanded my cap pieces down today and hot coated and glassed the bottom side. I figured if I glassed most of bottom now it would save me a back ache glassing it in the boat. The next plan of attack is to rough in the returns (Carling,Coaming) on the inboard side of cap, I plan on putting coaming pads all the way around the boat so how low should i make my returns? 4"? 3 1/2"? whats the measurement on the factory returns? or in boat building terms the carling. or some call it the coaming.

We call them coaming pads, never heard of carling. I would say 5" would be sufficient for most coaming pads. Have you looked into the Seadek pads? I would go that route if I were adding pads to my boat. I have been thinking about adding a pad between the leaning post and console.

I dont know what the heck they were called, but on my 250 Sportsman they were six inches. Thats i plan mine to be when i start the rebuild. I will tell you Kracker watching your build has me itching more and more to start on mine. But i dont want to start cutting until i get a couple loans paid off. I dont want to get ahead of myself. Are you planning to make your own coaming pads? Also why not abort the returns and run open gunnel caps? I seen several boats like that and i liked the look. But if you have to run wiring down the gunnels it can become unsightly. Just a thought.

If there is any offshore fishing happening on the boat coaming pads are like heaven! The most uncomfortable boat I have ever fished was a 25' Pro Sport, not only were there no pads but but the liner angle was so severe that when you hooked a big fish it felt like it was going to pull you overboard. The knees can only take so much.

Yea I'm doing my own pads, actually my buddy with Petty Marine is doing them. I'm running LEDS lights and other stuff under my cap so open cap is out of the question. A Carling in marine terms is the horizontal structual band that wraps the inboard side of the cap. The coaming is non structual horizontal "trim band". I had to look it up in a boat building dictionary so don't let seem like I'm some proffesional!!!!! Lol!! Jason wish you lived closer!! Because we would be wacking and jacking on that boat already

Good to know! Most of the pads I have seen were in the 5-6" range.

I found some pads on eBay that were a perfect fit for the V21. They say "Palm Beach" on em but I could not care less. Think I paid $53 total including shipping for the pair brand new. They are between 4 & 5 inches. Consider where the pads will be placed and find pads that fit or if you build them then obviously custom fit them.
