With the recent string of aftermarket impeller problems, I would spring for a factory kit when you have it done.

Your tell tell may be clogged with sand or salt after a long winters rest. If you haven't already, try sticking a piece of wire in it. Of course even if that is the case you'll probably want to go ahead with the new pump anyway if it is time. Years ago I had just replaced the pump on my Evinrude and it wouldn't pump. I tore it down 3 different times and never found a problem....still wouldn't pump. Stuck a piece of wire in the tell tell and out comes sand/salt crystals. Pumped great after that. Had it get clogged on a different motor (johnson) at the beginning of the season once. That time it looked like greasy chewing gum but pumped great after cleaning it out.

Yup, that's what I'm thinking, but not sure how old the pump is so starting with new.

Where did you stick a wire to check - suppose you had to drop the lower unit ?

Just stuck the wire where the water comes out - the pee hole. Both times it was clogged within 1 or 2 inches of the exit. The time with the gummy stuff I actually took the nipple apart from the hose to get at the goo.

3 or 4 times now that has happened me BlueRunner. My culprit was insects, something similar to a dirt dobber clogging up the pee stream. I straightened a hook out and cut the barb off and kept it in the tackle box. It always seemed to be obstructed at the outlet.
Sorry to hear that Bgreene, better safe than sorry.

Ridge....I bent a hook out straight, smashed the barb and kept it on board that season. Too funny!!
