Ok, here's something you can help me out with.
See what data you can find for the 45 Colt (Long Colt) using Blue Dot with a 250gr Hornady XTP.
I don't know the answers yet but I think I'm close.

from my Lee manual
nothing with blue dot in a 250 gr jacketed or xtp
260 gr xtp starting load 1.4 gr 839 fps ne load 13.0 gr 941 fps
not much given in the Lee Book with Blue Dot

Barnes manual only had one load and it was with the 225 xpb
(I just started reloading, the barnes book has a lot of real interesting info the other books don't have, but its with stuff I'll never use)

Handloads.com data http://handloads.com/loaddata/defaul...Powder&Source=

All my reloading stuff is up on a high shelf, thought about dragging it down, but figured I'd bust my *** trying to get it down. My neighbor and I just started reloading(we're splitting cost on materials), he's got a Judge with a 6" barrel that he want's to load up practice rounds for, I'm starting with 45 ACP to reload. I just got thru about 20 pages of crap that I read thru about running cast lead bullets thru a glock, got a head ache from all the bs and inflated egos. Any recommendations for acp? I picked up some ranier 230 FMJs and got some 230 gr LRN. I've been reading up on casting my own bullets, I've got a real good connection on high grade bulk lead, with the way ammo is going up(specifically 45 acp), its about the only way I'll be able to shoot. BTW, I've got a set of 270 Win dies if you know anyone that needs them. I'm going to at least sort my small primer and larger primer acp brass tomorrow

Most 45ACP's prefer FMJ's, some tolerate plated or lead stuff and even in semi wad cutters.
Usual problem is the feed ramp causing the tip of the bullet to stick slightly, causing the jam. Polishing the ramp helps but I just stick with the FMJ's.
Presently pushing a 230gr FMJ with 10.0gr of Blue Dot and getting 865fps out a 5" barrel and 980fps out of a 7" barrel in a Govt Model.
Blue Dot has been very reliable and easy to fool with, only problem is it's very dirty.
I am considering a Winchester 1892 (new model) and an EMF revolver both in 45 Colt. Already have all the components to reload them just haven't made up my mind.
Hey start a reloading thread, I'll give as much bad info as the next guy!

The best reliable info I've ever found is to try it and see.
I've been told the same that you've already found out. Some shoot most anything without any problems.
Seems to be firearms of the same make or even consecutive serial numbers have some subtle preferences.
Other things also can come into play. When I let my brother in law shoot mine I witnessed limp wristing being a problem feeding. Yet it did fine with me.
Also have an XD I have yet to try out. Been told they will eat anything, also been told they don't tolerate SWC's.

I'm sure you've read about using "the best brass" etc, etc.
As you see, I don't discriminate.
