The guy must be bummed for sure but the $396,000 price of a previous large blue fin was a rare occurrence....that fish sold in the first auction of the year in Japan and was also caught in Japanese waters and for that area was overly large. Those 3 things combined is what made it super expensive for the Japanese sushi market....a US caught Bluefin isnt worth a tenth of that price.

Very informative. They must have already been watching this guy before he caught the tuna.

That is a rather important point that the original story fails to make clear. Thanks for the reality check.

Says the fish must be caught on hook and line. I wonder what they regs say if the fish just jumped in the boat? Seriously.

Bradford - if the fish jumped in the boat it wouldn't have been caught on hook and line. At which point I would've put a big azz hook in his mouth and shot him in the head with the harpoon.

Don't remember where I heard it but I heard the Japs broke that auction record just for publicity, so I guess you could say the circumstances surrounding the $396k fish was a bit "fishy."

As for them taking that dudes fish - he should be glad they didn't fine him $100 per pound, which is what they would've done to me. I guess they still might after the "investigation."
