I'd say maybe the flaps could still be used on the side turned about 45 deg to the rear but I can also see where the spray hitting them at speed might do strange things and definitely no ping pong balls outside there.... I think I've seen thru hulls with the ping pong balls built inside them but the in-lines might just be the simplest plan for exiting the sides.
I don't know which years they did, but somewhere along the line, they ran the floor drains right into the bilge and relied on the bilge pump from there...I think it was after that they went to shootin' 'em outta the side...
