Basically the pump can push more pressure than the seal in the water pump housing can take, and also the water discharge from the exhaust goes down through the midsection so some of that will blow out the seam as well.

I always believe a "leak" can flow both ways...when a motor that does what we're talking about is sitting at rest w/no pressure from the pump, does anything seep back into the motor?...if so, does that cause any problems?...
