A Wellcraft advertisement from the mid to late 70's had a photo of the V-20 center console with a pair of two cylinder Evinrude 50 hp motors. I believe the old 50's were very similar to the 48's mentioned. It appeared to be on plane in the advertisement photo. My first 1972 V-20 was originally powered by a single Johnson 85 that ran a supposed 28 mph....of course prior to the great equalizer GPS. I believe they need to at least make somewhat over 25 mph at cruise to level out properly and get decent mileage. So we repowered with a 135 and I'd call that the minimum to plane a normal load off efficiently.

my old boat the teal/green one. When my uncle owned it he had twin 140 crossflows on the back on a steel/fiberglass bracket. That was some serious weight, he said that he used to always run with some tab down even with the motors having the fins on them. he said speed was around 55mph. I dont remember if he could get on plane with one motor or not. I would assume he could.

Bought my first V - '73 cuddy - with twin 140 Johnsons hanging on a shoddy transom repair. Motors weren't rigged and the boat was never launched with the twins. I suspect it would've sank as it slipped off the trailer.

Took motors off, had the transom repaired "right", rebuilt trailer and repowered with just one of the 140's on a jackplate. Ended up selling boat/motors separately and buying my V21.

that twin set up looks awesome. those engine were not that heavy probably the same weight as a big v-6 with a bracket.

How about 12 electric motors hung on the back - all rigged to one " throttle "

I bet a V would hit............... 5 mph that way.
