I always just snug em down to about 20 foot pounds or so and then go until it is at the next cotter pin hole or in the case of the MERC until the 3 tangs are lined up with the retaining notches and fold em in.

Hows about a good coat of anti-seize on the shaft and spline too?

Always a good idea so you'll be able to remove it later without a torch and hammer.

Book says 55 ft lbs of torque on that engine. I usually go around 45-50 on mine. (1991 200 hp Merc) Make sure you Never-seez the shaft before you reassemble.

Safety tip for anyone... when you work on a prop, MAKE SURE that the key is in the off position, the positive wire to the battery is disconnected and the spark plug leads are disconnected at the engine. 2 cycle engines can start very easily and lots of people have gotten very nasty injuries because the engine kicked while they were working on the prop.
