what i didnt get was that the first thing i looked at was the temp, gauge and it was not hot. maybe something like a bag caught my intake on the lower unit but it still didnt read hot, what do you think?

I have a 200 hp 91 Merc that does the same thing occasionally.. on mine it's a bad heat sensor that I'm too cheap to replace since the engine is a spare just sitting around. For me it sounds when I start and goes away instantly. As long as your temp gage is showing normal operating temp, your telltale pisser is showing a good stream and your engine feels warm, not hot when you feel the block I'd think you were ok.. of course that's just an opinion and to be perfectly safe I would get it checked as soon as possible..

You might wanna verify that you temp gauge is working properly...it probably is, but sometimes it pays to be sure...particularly if the problem persists...
