the drive is the limiting factor. I always said that OMC engineers smoked a lot of dope, the electro shift proves it. Just imagine two engineers talking... "Hey, I got this idea, lets stick an electromagnet in the bottom of this drive to make it shift(insert Beavis and Butthead laugh), then stick the whole thing under water(laugh, laugh, cough, cough). Better yet, we'll use these gears made out of faucet handles to transfer all the load of the engine(laugh, laugh, cough, cough)"

The electroshift shifting actually worked pretty good, smooth and positive, it was limited by HP and the ever popular high throttle shift, but the tilt mechanism, ball gears, worm drive steering, and the rubber boot around the drive were more than enough to offset its rare good feature. Its no wonder they finally gave up and contracted Volvo to build their drives. If you think this drive is weird, you aught to take a look at a hydromechanical drive

So, I should NOT do anything too stupid, like bolting a bravo 3 on the back before I take the trash out with it?

My first V20 had that drive on the back of it.... Truthfully I can't say anything really bad about it,.... other than the insulation on the wires going down into the bottom of the outdrive keep getting hard and breaking or shorting.. I guess from the heat... and the ball gear set from the engine to the outdrive was a constant wear point... after my third set I got to the point that I took a worn set, got out my welder and put hardfacing on all the sprockets where they contacted each other....that actually worked pretty good.. increased the time it took to wear out a set of gears by almost two and a half times. Oh.. and the electric tilt motor inside the hull has this little gear on the end of the motor shaft that has to mate with the drive shaft for the half gear tilt mechanism...truly a genius thought that one up...cause it sits right next to the engine and is just about impossible to get your hands around if you have to change the tilt motor.. (and you will) . But when the unit was working it actually worked quiet well... very smooth shifts because the magnets would pull the gears into forward or reverse position electrically ...so it was a nice gental but constant force being applied. And it's actually a fairly heavy unit.. it will make a wonderful anchor. Listen to Spare... run, do not walk, away from that outdrive.

Talking

Put it for sale in the yard for $250 and come down to $225. Help the poor guy who buys it hitch it to his truck.
