No lid. It's just open. It's a good place to drop stuff quickly that you don't want to roll around the boat. I think what your seeing is the actual back of the seat, it has a hard plastic/foamy type something (?) for a back, I just left it and painted it to match, that's why there are the two little holes. They are vent holes for the foam in the seat, I think.
When I finish the helm seat, I'll post pictures, it has a cover and a seat facing backwards. Give me two weeks. It should be done by then. Since you're the observant one, I'm sure you noticed the motor cover says 150 but my signature says 200. hmmm. Which do you think it is?

From previous posts I believe you have 200 ponies lurking beneath the 150 cowling.
