Went to take the boat out this past weekend and had no fire so I started troubleshooting using this guide. http://www.outboardignition.com/page30.asp "Four Cylinder Engines" at bottom of page.

I do not have spark on any cylinder until I remove the yellow wires from the rectifier. I then gain spark on the #1, #2 and #3 cylinders.

I plan on replacing the rectifier. My question is regarding the #4 cylinder with no spark. Could this be an issue related to the rectifier or another problem all together? With a faulty rectifier unhooked should I gain spark on all cylinders?

Thanks,
Curt

what i've always found was if you turn the motor over and work the timing advance for firing at the flywheel you will regain fire the stator's will need working to wake them up i would only fix the rectifier first it may come to life once you fix that, crank it the # 4 may come back to life with extra RPMs on the flywheel the starter can't spin it that fast. a new powerpack may not fix it may just hurt the pocket.

I have actually gotten it running a few times. I have reved it up to around 4k several times. The problem still is intermittent.

It seems the spark results differ day to day. All cylinders have fired a few times, only one cylinder sometimes and other times it's a mixed bag. I never know what cylinder will or will not fire. Today I am only getting spark on the #2 cylinder. All variables are the same during the tests. The coils on the dead cylinders have been swapped and the problem stays on the dead cylinder.

CDI or Mallory?

Is one brand better than the other? I have used Mallory products before and they have always been great. I have also found the Mallory a bit cheaper than the CDI.

Any comments on the two would be appreciated.

Thanks,

CDI I know makes them for BRP now as I bought one direct from an EVINRUDE dealer awhile back and it had blue SIERRA connectors on it. There all probably the same though actually as there really isn't a large enough market now for more than one company to make them. I believe CDI has a better warranty on them.

I got the new power pack in yesterday. Put it on this morning and the motor started right up. Problem solved.

Thanks to everyone that helped.
