What MJ said, I've never been able to get it to prime without filling the bowl, then I disconnect from the engine, stick something in the ball valve & pump till it comes out without air, otherwise you risk the air getting to the engine right as you leave the ramp.

If anybody cares to chime in with the best brand of primer bulb I'm all ears. I know some are junk from seeing posts on here before. I just don't remember which was best. I believe mine needs replacing as well.

Use to be Merc had some good balls, but Evinrude (BRP) seems to be the best now for the money these days.
I just bought one from my local marina and it says it has twice the suction and is blue in color that says it stays soft even in cold weather. I will say this, no gas in the filter and 4 pumps I had gas!! Will see in the long run?? But I was also told that I no longer need a ball with a 4 stroke as they have a electric pump that does the work??

My buddy has a 150 4 stroke Yamaha less than 2 yrs old and it came with a primer bulb. One one occasion we put in and only made it 1/2 mile before the engine started acting up, cutting out, wheezing and such. Come to find out he did not prime the bulb before we took off. It seems he needs a bulb for his 4 banger. Who knows....
