And they eliminated the major cause of oil pump failures on the late model 2.5's.
What did they change?

got rid of the coupler with the small magnet in it for the sensor, seems like they were swelling up and locking up the drivin gear.

I thought by 05 they had gone to the different coil system and a central ECU, Iwas told this started in 03 on MERCS. I know that right around 96-97 the engines underwent some major revisions and really changed things internally. See if you can find a way to talk BS out of MJ's old 175 MERC and get that shipped down to yeah.

Talking

all the mercury two stroke V6 motors are pure junk, if you have one on you're boat, take it off, spend a whole lot of money on a new foreign made motor, call me and I'll be glad to haul the old junk motor off to get it out of your way, and I won't even charge your for doing so.

Decisions, decisions! Another motor popped up. It is a 1999 Johnson 150 for $1000 less than the 2005Merc. What will have to happen to make it work on my boat? Would it be better than a Merc?
