The Johnson 115 on Old School topped out at about 34 mph this season based on the gps. I cruised around 25 mph. I think more could be achieved with some tuning and prop optimization.

Hey Parishht - Not to bust your balls too badly here, but what HP were you looking at before???? 25hp - 90hp???? I know I'm an *** :)

Unfortunately with the low 20" transom you are limited by weight.

I imagine that you'd want to keep the motor weight under or close to 400lbs which significantly narrows your choices (eliminating almost all newer v6 outboards).

As mentioned before your best choices based on price, reliability, fuel economy are going to be the following. I think you mentioned that you wanted to keep your OMC controls . . . so if you have the red plug . . . you are looking at 1995 and earlier.

v4 OMC 115 - 130, 140
v6 OMC 60 degree 150 or 175
v6 Merc 2.0L, 2.4 or 2.5L
V6 Yamaha 150 - 200 2 stroke carb.
v4 Yamaha 115, 130

For a 115 OMC make sure it is the late model looper as they are much stronger than the earlier cross-flows. My V-20 would hit 27-28 with just me in it with the 84 115 it had on it. There are quite a few 120-140 85+ loopers out there and they are good engines. There a bit heavy, but pretty good on fuel. A 2.0L or 2.4L MERC, and the 150-200 small block YAMAHAS are also great choices like BS said.

Would a newer engine really weigh more than my previous?????

I would think that teh manufacturers would want to make them lighter and still get more power?

Yes. You would think that they would but Emission req has made the new motors very heavy. In all fairness you can't really compare a 150 inline 6 to a 2.5L 150, but you get the idea. My 200hp Mercury weighs less than my 90hp Suzuki 4 stroke by 60 lbs.

Here's just one example of the weight/hp comparison for a Mercury 150.

275lbs 1975 Mercury 150 inline 6
359lbs 1979 Mercury V6 150 (BTW 1979 V200 weighs 331lbs)
375lbs 1985 Mercury v6 150 (BTW 1985 V200 weighs 365lbs)
415lbs 1996 Mercury v6 150 EFI
455lbs 2000 Mercury v6 150 Optimax saltwater
635lbs 2006 Mercury v6 200 Verado

Now you know why I like the 2.4L Merc's 365lbs is about as lightest v6 200hp made . . . plus they are chrome bore motors! I'm running a 1979 Merc 200 powerhead and it's still a rocket out of the hole.

whats wrong with my engine its a 150 mercury 1988 model year and runs perfect but with 3 people on bored and a ton of bait im lucky if i get her to go 32 mph
115 goes 45 something is wrong, and my prop is the right size 15x17 ppppeeeeerrffect

A 115 might push a V20 over a waterfall at 45 mph...
