Our nearshore waters, inland rivers and sounds are typically so murky that no one ever dives in them. The tides rip through and keep everything stirred up.

Well, at least that's what I thought for many years, until a friend and I were heading up the ICW, going through a no wake zone at idle speed, when about 40 feet ahead and right near a channel marker up popped a scuba diver's head. He looked around for just a few seconds and quickly submerged. It was one of those, "did I just see what I thought I saw?" moments. I looked at my friend just as he began to say, "Did you see THAT?" No boat anywhere nearby, and certainly no diver flag. To this day I still have no idea what in the heck he was doing diving out in that murky creek.
