BGA so sad man, sorry to hear about your buddy. We rescued our 1st dog in March of '07. She was 2 months old when we got her, now 2.5 yrs. I try not to think of the day we will have to separate. Just can't imagine. My sister just lost her 1st dog this year. His name was Toot Toot and he was 17 or 18 yrs old. Put it this way, I'm 36 and she got that dog when we were both still living at home....I was 19 and barely out of high school. She found him on the side of the road and blew the horn at him...hence the name "Toot toot". That was very sad since he was always there for so long. She waited a couple months and now has a new addition.

Sorry BGA!

BGA,

No words can heal, or make that type of pain in one's heart go away, after an ordeal as that. My thoughts are with you and only time will make the heart feel better. Sorry BGA for your loss.

Default In the same boat right now as you...

We put our 14 year old lab down two weeks ago today. It was time, she was shutting down. It was a terrible experience - no two ways about it.

To comment on your question regarding when you might think about getting another dog...I always thought I would be the one that wanted another dog right away, and the wife would want to wait. Well, turns out just the opposite is true.

But, we visited the local shelter and they just so happened to have an awesome litter of pups - nice big healthy black mix breeds, the mother is a large hound and not sure on the father, but looks like lab.

We are picking ours up this week - currently trying to pick out a name!

I miss our old girl terribly, but I think it will be great to have an active, playful dog again...it's been a while since we've had that sort of "dog energy" around the house. Although the 6 and 8 year old kids keep us hopping...

Good luck in whatever you do - you will know when the time is right!

Dave

Sorry to hear about your loss.

My wife and I decided to wait last year after we lost our dog and within a couple months
my son called from California asking if we could take his beagle.
Bentley is the latest member of our family, and I do mean member.
Bentley grew up in Ca. so he is not used to cold weather,
we got him a hooded sweat shirt so during the colder months he loves to wear it, he even gets upset when you take it off to wash it.

This is Bentley in his hoodie:

If you are a dog person, the right dog will find you.

I want to thank each and every one of you for your posts of condolences and comfort; they mean a lot to me and I've read each one a couple times over.

I especially appreciate the comments from those of you that have recently gone through this because I'm guessing the OP brought back some sad emotions as you've remembered your losses. Thanks for sharing from a "been there" perspective. There's something comforting about knowing you're not the only one who has gone through this (well, we all know people go through it all the time, but it's a help when others take the time to share their experiences).

Well, we've sent in our applications to two rescue shelters (one for labs and another for golden retrievers). The process will take a number of weeks, which I figure will be good for us.

Thanks again guys, you've all been an encouragement to me through this...
