Sorry to here about the one over the side! I've done it too, not recently though (knock on wood!!!!).
Abu Garcia 5500 or 6500 reels with a real soft tip casting rod. The rod tip should be soft enough to feel a fluke fart on the end of the line without him feeling the rod tip. You also want something that can handle 2 - 4 oz sinkers and allow you to set the hook. I've found plenty of cheap $20 - $30 walmart rods that fit the bill well!! I also have a few 10 year old 7ft black fiberglass Penn Powersticks are pretty good I think they are the Medium Light or Light versions of the rods. With the 6500 series abus the rods also double as great chunking rods for bass . . . up to 25 - 30 lbs.

BS, that's pretty much what we use down here for stripers...mainly the 6500s for a little more line...rod sounds the same, too only we drop down to 15# line...got a 23 lber in that the other day...LOTTA fun...
