I know a couple of other guys who had the same results with champion plugs. How do you feel about champion.

i run NGK plugs in my 96 johnson 150 and have had no problems with them. i get them for free. have been running them for 2 years.

but ferm knows his engines and i would never question him.

I took my flywheel off so I could see the stator. I noticed that at some point there was some stuff that seemed to be leaking off the stator and onto the block. Is this normal. The stuff has dried hard and is not stickey. Is the stator bad? Thanks for your replies.

that's where it has been run hot and the stator lost some of the tar like instuallon, yeah that could be it as the stator could have some resistance lose. i have a few that way that still run fine thought. and as ferm said stick to Champions in a J/E. run from the NGK's aka NFG's

When exactly did this problem begin? When did you clean the carbs? Was the problem there before the carb job or not until after? Did cleaning the carbs change it at all? There is a good chance you got the idle and mid range jets mixed up and that is causing your issues. You could have had dirty carbs to begin with, and then if you got the air bleeds in the wrong spots afterwards it would have the same symptoms. Find the numbers on your carbs and then go to EVINRUDES parts site and make sure you have the jets in the right places according to the parts diagrams.
