ENGINE OVERHEATING CAUSED THE RUBBER FLAPS IN THE MANIFOLD TO MELT?...sounds like a basic design flaw to me

the rubber flaps will melt if you burn the impeller up and continue to run the engine, merc and volvo has a simular design. The flaps are mainley for backing down fast, catching a stern wave or when backign the boat in the water at the ramp. If the exhaust is configured correctly, it won't need the flaps. I'll bet money that after the engine over heated, it dieseled and ran backwards just enough to suck water back in the exhaust, if it had been cranked up again after cooling down, it would probably been ok.
