there are deffinaty two camps of thought on those engines, people whoe have them and love them, and people who have Yamahas and hate them. They have had their issues, but mercury has taken care of most of their problems. But like Ferm said, those things are heavy, their listed weight is with no prop, oil, gear lube, power steering(standard on this engine). mercury cheated on thier list weights. Bass and Wallie did a write up on comparing actual weights of big fourstroke outboards a while back, I can't remember how much it was, but the Merc was heavier than all the others

I have a friend that replaced two Suzukis with 2 ea. 250 Verados on a Baha Cruiser and he's had no problems so far. His are 2006 models and they get used on a regular basis. Many more hours on them than the 300 hrs on the one advertised. They might be big, bulky and heavy, but I think the supercharger makes up for some of that. I do love my Yamaha though.

one other problem is the SUPERCHARGER they suck salt air in and force it in the motors. heard of lots of guys with issues of them have major internal issues due to salt corrosion inside the motors.

i used to service and maintain 8 for a oil field drilling company, who used the engines on small crew boats. those should be the GEN I's which do not have the nice upgrades as the Gen II's i.e. non-forged pistons, different bearings etc. like stated earlie S/C's would crap out if there was water splashing on the engine alot. other than that the engine really isnt a bad engine. its a very neat design but the weight is out of this world. make sure the boat can handle it. the DTS system is really nice. if he buys them maintenence, maintenence, maintence, make sure he changes the engine oil, oil filter, L/U oil, and grease the engine every year. also use mobil 1 full syn. we would run the engines with different oils, then at 50 hours of usage we would pull and engine report and change the oil then send a sample to chevron's lubewatch and it turned out that the Mobil 1 full syn was the best to use. on those engines i have reaplced any part imaginable, i couple of common problems early on were the VST having issues, oil pumps, few S/C's. the lower units are pretty solid on a light boat.

I know a couple guys with them and they love em. One thing is for damn sure, when someone hits the throttle on one of them you better be SERIOUSLY hangin on. With the electronic response of the cableless throttles combined with them being supercharged one guy I know has almost thrown several people off his boat...they are BADAZZ. He wont drive it onto the trailer because he is afraid he will put his boat in the bed of his truck.

When it comes to outboards and being offshore . . . I'm a firm believer in the K.I.S.S. Moto.
